Our team shared information on root cause analysis and strategy development (including the importance of developing a rationale for how improvement strategies will work). Grantees went into breakout rooms to engage in a brainwriting activity on Mural, during which they shared strategies related to the main challenge areas (virtual engagement, partner development, youth recruitment).

We used this call to introduce ourselves to the team and follow up on their kickoff conversation to define their challenge. They share more about how the pandemic has effected their ability to reach out to youth (their plan to reach church youth groups was hampered). We developed an improvement goal with the team, and then introduced them to empathy interviews and suggested they consider talking to youth to learn more about what appealed to them about the program (as this might help shape their outreach).

We explored root causes more than they had named in their kickoff activity (getting specific about the challenge). They added to the list of root causes and prioritized those that they felt were most pressing. We initially thought their issue might be related to messaging but realized it was more about reach and awareness. They thought the messaging was good but how to reach young people during the pandemic?

We revisited our discussion of root causes of their recruitment challenges. They talked about awareness of the program, as well as hesitancy related to an abstinence message. Their goal is to change that perception. As they had mentioned a possible strategy to use youth to cultivate their social media presence, we decided to explore that strategy more as one to test in this pilot. They shared initial thoughts about what they might do; our team followed by sharing a FYSB social media toolkit with considerations for using social media as a programmatic tool.

Brandon, one of ACAC's educators, joined the call this week, as Jasline was busy. Brandon shared the details of how the team planned to implement their youth social media strategy. He shared that they hired a young person to partner with him on leading the effort, and that the two of them would coordinate with ACAC's youth council to maintain the Instagram and TikTok accounts for youth recruitment. He shared that the first goal was getting the new hire trained in Love Notes and then would bring in the youth council to support the work.

Goal was still to narrow in on a strategy. Team asked if they could work on a strategy that they were already in the process of implementing rather than come up with a new strategy. They suggested two: 1) They intentionally call on youth and wanted to learn how that was working 2) they have been making adaptations to Love Notes to update some of the pictures and examples in order to make them more relevant to youth. They already ask for feedback from young people about the adaptations and use that to inform their plan for future groups.

We got an update from ACAC on the youth outreach strategy. Then our team shared information about the purpose of road testing and shared and refined learning questions with the team. We also started to discuss data collection opportunities and noted we could develop suggested questions for post-road test focus groups.
